Description
Shared Web Licensing is a licensing model, hosted by Ansys, that does not require any local licensing server. Ansys software connects over the internet to the license server.
This guide walks you through each step to configure and utilize Shared Web licensing.
More information, known limitations and supported Ansys products can be found here: INFO - Ansys Shared Web Licensing Overview
Quick Start
Step 1 - Managing Users
Required Access
By default, only your Account Support Coordinator (ASC) has access to create and assign users. If needed, your ASC can give you Administrator access using the steps below.
To access Shared Web Licensing, the user must exist in the Ansys ID portal for your account.
View Users on Your Account
- Sign in to the Ansys ID Portal with your Ansys account.
- Review the list of users on the User page
Add a Single User
- In the Ansys ID Portal, click + Add in the upper right
- Enter the user's email address, and use the Member role. The email address must match the email used for their Ansys account.
- Click Add

Add Multiple Users
- In the Ansys ID Portal, click + Add in the upper right
- Click the Import Users tab
- Download the Excel or CSV template, and populate with user information
- Select the updated Excel or CSV template from your computer
- Click Upload

Step 2 - Managing Groups
Groups Are Not Required
In Shared Web Licensing, groups can be used to reserve/restrict access to licenses to certain sets of users. They are not required, and without groups any user will be able to access any available Shared Web License.
For example, if you had a set of CFD Premium entitlements, and a set of Mechanical Enterprise entitlements, you could create groups of your CFD users and your Mechanical users, and then assign the Mechanical entitlements to only the Mechanical users, and the CFD entitlements to the CFD users
Create a Group
- In the Ansys ID Portal, click on Groups from the left menu
- Click Add Group in the Upper Right
- Enter a name, description and select General for the type of group. Private has been deprecated by Ansys
- Click Add

Add Users to a Group
- In the Ansys ID Portal, click on Groups from the left menu
- From the list, click on the group name
- Click on the Member tab
- Click on Add
- Select the members you wish to add
- Click Add
Remove Users from A Group
- In the Ansys ID Portal, click on Groups from the left menu
- From the list, click on the group name
- Check the boxes and click Remove to remove multiple users, or click the … > Remove User From Group to remove an individual user
Remove a Group
- In the Ansys ID Portal, click on Groups from the left menu
- Click the … next to the group you wish to remove
- Click Remove Group
Step 3 - Assigning Entitlements to a Group
Assigning an Entitlement to a Group is Optional
By default, without groups or entitlement assignments, all shared web licenses will be available to all users listed in the ID Portal.
When an entitlement is assigned to a group, only users of that group have access to that entitlement. This is useful to ensure a group of users always have access to a certain entitlement, or situations where one department is paying for a speciality license.
Manage Entitlement Assignments
- Sign into the Ansys Licensing Portal
- On the left, click Assignments, then Groups, and select the group from the list
- Under the “Assigned Licenses” column, click the pencil to modify the quantity assigned to that group
- In the dialog that opens, change the quanitity as desired and click Save
Step 4 - Enable Shared Web Licensing
Follow the steps here to enable Shared Web licensing: HOW TO - Enable/Disable Shared Web Licensing.
After enabling, the Licensing Settings utility will show all the products available to a user.
Step 5 - Learn Roaming
Roaming is utilized to check out a license to the local computer, so that a license can be utilized when an internet connection would not be utilized. View the Shared Web License Server tab on this page: HOW TO - Borrow & Return an Ansys License
